Weight Guide

This guide will help you to understand what and how to determine the chargeable weight for your shipment.

Chargeable weight is a term which refers to the weight which a shipment will be charged.

This can be either the volumetric or actual weight.

L   = Length (l)

W = Width (w)

H  = Height(h)

What is a volumetric weight?

Volumetric weight is also known as dimensional weight.

It is a method used by courier/postal company to determine the actual space a shipment will take up.

How to calculate volumetric weight?

Use the box/carton’s (length) x (width) x (height) in centimeters and divide(÷) with 5000

The value from this calculation is the volumetric weight in kilogram (kg).

Frequently Asked Question

Why should I use 5000 as a divider when calculating the volumetric weight?

This is the dimensioner value used by international shipping company such as Fedex, DHL, TNT and UPS. We are following this formula as we engage these companies for our movements.

What is an actual weight?

Actual weight is acquired when you measure the box (with items inside) on the weighing scale/machine.

How to get an actual weight?

Weigh the whole box together with the content on a weighing machine.

The measurement to use is kilogram(kg).

Example 1:

Step 1: Determine the volumetric weight

Length = 20cm

Width  = 20cm

Height = 10cm

Volumetric weight =( l x w x h) ÷ 5000

                                     = 20cm x 20cm x 10cm ÷ 5000

                                     = 0.8

This is the volumetric weight. 0.8kg

Step 2: Determine the actual weight

Determine the actual weight of the box by weighing it on a weighing machine or scale.

For instance, the weight is 3kg.

Step 3: Compare the volumetric weight vs actual weight

In this case, the actual weight is higher than volumetric weight.

This means the chargeable weight is 3kg.

Example 2:

Step 1: Determine the volumetric weight

Length = 50cm

Width  = 40cm

Height = 30cm

Volumetric weight =( l x w x h) ÷ 5000

                                     = 50cm x 40cm x 30cm ÷ 5000

                                     = 12

This is the volumetric weight. 12kg

Step 2: Determine the actual weight

Determine the actual weight of the box by weighing it on a weighing machine or scale.

For instance, the weight is 3kg.

Step 3: Compare the volumetric weight vs actual weight

In this case, the volumetric weight is higher than actual weight.

This means the chargeable weight is 12kg.

After the chargeable weight is determined, match it with the price guide table. If the chargeable weight is not in a round number, we will round it to the next higher weight break for price calculation.

For example, if the chargeable weight is 5.3kg, we will calculate the chargeable weight as 6kg.

What if I have multiple pieces or cartons to send out?

Step 1: Measure each and every carton as per above step to determine the volumetric and actual weight.

Step 2: Add up all the boxes chargeable weight and actual weight.

Step 3: Compare which is higher, either the volumetric weight or actual weight.

Example:

Box 1

Box 2

Box 3

Actual weight (kg)

4kg

5kg

6kg

Volumetric weight(kg)

2kg

3kg

4kg

Total actual weight of the 3 boxes = 15kg

Total volumetric weight of the 3 boxes = 9kg

Final chargeable weight used will be whichever is higher.

In this case, chargeable weight will be = 15kg
